Heavy traffic, wheel to wheel and bumping at over 150mph at the prestigious Sacramento Mile was common. In 1968 the USAC Champ Dirt Cars made their annual trek to Sacramento, CA. Mario Andretti leads Bud Tingelstad, Bill Vuckovich, and Gary Bettenhausen. The race, regarded as one of toughest in the Thunder and Lighting division where brave men only need apply,  was won by A.J. Foyt after a long duel with Roger Ward.
